Son consideradas como torres de agua y proveedores de servicios ecosist\u00e9micos desde las monta\u00f1as hacia las tierras bajas de la vertiente Pac\u00edfica, Caribe y Amaz\u00f3nica. Tambi\u00e9n, los p\u00e1ramos son centros de biodiversidad y de patrimonio natural y cultural para las poblaciones locales, y son altamente vulnerables a las actividades humanas y a los cambios ambientales y clim\u00e1ticos. Sin embargo, a pesar de su importancia y vulnerabilidad, apenas tres d\u00e9cadas atr\u00e1s los p\u00e1ramos eran regiones poco estudiadas.
